We know that the kids in your life love pies, and what’s more, pies make people happy. They also satisfy cravings for something sweet, and really help with the whole “sweet tooth” thing we all have.
Have you ever wondered just how to make a pie? Who knew that baking a pie is not as hard as it seems: it’s just apples and sugar!
Now that we know just how easy it is to make pies, we can share our favorite recipes with you.
Today we’re going to show you how to make one of our favorite pies: Caramel Apple Pecan Streusel Pie Recipe.
This recipe is perfect because it has apples, which are the quintessential fall fruit, and rich caramel sauce!
You might be thinking “But what about all those other recipes I saw?”. Don’t worry- the apple pecan streusel pie recipe will be enough for you and all of your friends and family (and they’ll love every bite).
Plus, most of those other recipes are for sweet pies, and this is a delicious dessert that can also be your breakfast!
Ingredients:
For the filling:
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar or 1 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (see below for conversion)
- 3 large eggs, at room temperature
- 3 tablespoons milk, at room temperature (or 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, if you have it) [this is optional to prevent curdling] – we don’t do that in our house because I’m a wuss. If you want more flavor in your pie you can use this method. You can also use granulated sugar, but watch out that it doesn’t crystalize.
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 cups peeled, cored and chopped tart apples (makes about 2 1/2 lbs., peeled and cored) [if you are making this during the winter time or if you know someone with a tree, get the apples from them. You can also use frozen or dried apples] – we got our fresh from an apple tree my parents grew in their backyard. Even if we didn’t use fresh apples, I usually would peel them because I don’t like skins in my pie. At the store I always buy frozen or canned apples, which is also fine. This is also a good time to peel, core and dice the apples if you’re lazy.
For the topping:
- 5 tablespoons butter (at room temperature) [not necessary to soften butter]
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar or 1 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (see below for conversion)
- 1 cup pecans, chopped [we use light brown but you can use regular if you want] – we buy them in bulk at Sam’s club. If your store doesn’t carry them, just chop your own up.

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Combine the butter, sugar and eggs in a large mixing bowl and beat with a mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the milk (if you’re using it), vanilla extract, apples and stir with a wooden spoon until combined. Pour into a 9-inch pie pan and set aside.
3. To make the topping, mix together the topping ingredients in a small bowl [or just use your hands]. Sprinkle over the apple mixture [I have trouble getting all of it evenly over my pie so I don’t bother with this part].
4. Bake the pie at 350 degrees F for 50 to 55 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown. The filling will be bubbling and the top will be crusty when done.
5. Let cool completely before serving.

Cook’s notes:
We recommend using 3 large eggs as this will provide you with the best taste. If you are worried about the eggs being uncooked, use 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar to avoid curdling. This will also add extra flavor to your pie.
